Intimacy is a rare thing in pop music these days, but from the first chords
of Sarah Holgate's album and the first breath of her voice, you realize that
her art is not "pop music these days." Her moody, jazzy piano and vocals
swinging from sweet to sultry and back again blend the intimacy of Joni
Mitchell confessionals, the soulful vocal melodies and harmonies of Lauryn
Hill and the jazz sensibility of Diana Krall into a sound that is at once
familiar yet uniquely her own set to a backdrop of a small jazz combo and
occasional chamber orchestra.

Adjectives aside, Sarah's voice and musicianship should come as no surprise
since she has honed both through years of practicing and performing - most
recently at Eastman School of Music and Penn State University. Her studies
in classical piano and voice have given Sarah the understanding of music
necessary to support her prolific songwriting; her second album is nearly
written before the presses have even cooled from the printing of her first.
|
After the release of her debut album being fêted with a private performance
in June 2004, Sarah will take leave of her weekly appearances at area clubs
and restaurants as she begins her tour of the New England and Mid-Atlantic
regions with a newly assembled jazz trio for support. Backed by a savvy,
professional publicity team as solid as her band, she will begin her journey
to new fans in new markets, becoming a regional presence as a
pop/jazz/classical crossover performer.
Despite her busy scheduling of performing, recording and rehearsing, Sarah
still finds time for her family - in fact, she involves them in her music.
Her brother Chris adds guitar to several tracks on the album, her brother
Eric is featured on bass and a song written for their brother David is the
last track on her album which Sarah performs with supporting vocals from her
sisters Julie and co-author Jenny.
